were held this evening Friday October 20th at the Burlington
Hotel Dublin. The gala event was attended by over 700 people
form the radio industry in Ireland and the UK. The host for
the evening was Christian O'Connell of Virgin Radio London.
The awards recognise the contribution of Irish radio to the
record industry in Ireland and the Broadcasting Commission's
strategy to promote excellence in broadcasting. It is considered
critical to the development of the sector that the achievements
of programme makers are acknowledged and saluted.
The Awards have gone from strength to strength and are now
firmly established as the most sought-after accolade in Irish
radio broadcasting. More than 400 entries were received in
twenty eight categories this year from twenty eight radio
stations throughout Ireland. The Judges commented that the
standard of entries was exceptional this year. This year for
the first time stations were judges by their peers in the
Irish radio industry.
The flagship awards are the Overall Best Station of the Year
- won this year by Newstalk 106 while the Outstanding Achievement
Awards went to Jimmy Magee who first broadcast on Radio fifty
years ago!
